Pulsed-light treatment (DPL)

DPL is a commercial term used for a form of filtered intense pulsed light (IPL), rather than a separate type of laser. Light targets selected pigment or visible blood vessels after the cause of the brown or red mark is assessed.

Is it right for me?

It may suit selected sun-related spots or vascular concerns. Recent tanning, light sensitivity and melasma require particular caution; suspicious lesions need diagnosis before cosmetic treatment.

Tell the clinician about cold sores, unusual scarring, pigment changes after injury, current medicines and recent procedures. Active infection or irritated skin may require treatment first.

Evidence and realistic expectations.

Evidence concerns particular IPL systems, light filters and diagnosed pigment or vascular targets. The label “DPL” alone does not identify a standardized treatment or establish better results than other light systems.

It does not suit every skin tone, tan or pigment condition. Melasma can worsen, and a changing or suspicious mark needs medical diagnosis before light treatment. Pigment treatment is not skin-cancer treatment.

Risks to understand.

Redness, swelling, infection, prolonged pigment change and scarring are possible. Your skin tone, previous reactions, current medicines and ability to follow aftercare influence suitability.

What to expect.

Consultation

Discuss your concern, medical history, previous treatments and what you would like to preserve. Dr. Roy will explain suitable options, alternatives, risks and fees before you decide.

Treatment

The skin is assessed and eye protection is used. A handpiece delivers selected light pulses, followed by aftercare and sun-protection guidance.

Recovery

Redness or swelling may occur, and treated spots can darken before flaking. These visible changes can extend across roughly one to two weeks.

Results and review

Tone changes are assessed after the skin settles and across any planned series. Recurrence and continuing sun exposure can affect results.

Number of visits

A course may involve a series, with each treatment reviewed for response and pigment effects.
