PATIENT GUIDE

How can melasma be treated without making pigmentation worse?

Melasma care usually starts with a confirmed diagnosis, consistent light protection and appropriate topical treatment. Procedures are selected cautiously because irritation can worsen pigmentation. Improvement takes time, and pigment can return.

Confirm the cause of the patch

Not every dark patch is melasma. A new, changing or unfamiliar mark should be assessed before using a cosmetic treatment on it. Your skin tone, previous irritation, hormonal context and treatment history help guide the discussion.

Make protection part of the plan

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, shade and a hat. A tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides can add protection against visible light. Choose a product you can use consistently and follow its directions for application and reapplication.

Use treatment in stages

Prescription or other suitable topical care may be considered first. Peels, light-based treatments and other procedures are not automatic next steps. Their potential benefit must be weighed against irritation and darker pigmentation afterward. Avoid copying someone else’s combination or escalating a stinging product on your own.

Plan beyond the first improvement

Melasma can persist or recur, so a useful plan includes maintenance and a review point. Ask how to recognize irritation, when to stop a product and contact the clinic, and what would justify changing the approach. Dr. Roy’s condition guide explains the options available for discussion; the consultation establishes your individual plan.

Questions patients ask.

Can melasma be permanently cured?

A permanent cure cannot be promised. It may improve, but recurrence is possible and ongoing protection remains important.

Is a stronger peel necessarily better?

No. More irritation can make pigmentation harder to manage. The choice depends on the diagnosis and skin response.

Can I start with a consultation rather than a procedure?

Yes. You can book an assessment to understand the pigmentation and discuss home care and treatment options.
